Everyone has heard it, and most people follow it: “put a coat on or you’ll catch a cold.” But, does wearing a coat actually help? The short answer is yes and no. There are many factors that go into this, and giving a direct answer isn’t very easy. A coat will definitely help children or adults avoid a cold, but it does not prevent it. Read on to find out more about this.

Rhinovirus
The common cold is usually caused by one of several hundred different rhinoviruses. These viruses are capable of causing you to cough, get dizzy, have a runny nose and all the other wonderful symptoms that go along with a cold. So, does a coat block the rhinovirus?

Not in the slightest. Most experts say that there are over 100 types of rhinoviruses that pass through the nasal cavity with ease. The tiny hairs and mucus in the nose are unable to catch these viruses, so they go further into the body, causing a cold once they spread.

So, in this light, coats cannot prevent a cold. Despite this, it is still good to wear one.

Virus Protection
When foreign matter or air comes into the body, it is processed through the respiratory tract. The nose often catches larger pieces of matter, but smaller pieces like diseases and viruses are caught in the upper part of the respiratory tract.

So, what happens when foreign matter is caught? The bronchial path will begin undulating, forcing the tiny hairs in the respiratory system to react. They will take the foreign matter and they will push it out. This results in you coughing or sneezing briefly to get the matter out of your body. This is much different than actually catching the cold, which causes prolonged coughing and sneezing.

With this in mind, it doesn’t seem like a coat would be useful. But, that would be far from the truth, because a coat is needed to really help the process along.

How Coats Help
The tiny hairs in the respiratory tract, and the entire passageway itself, are very responsive to temperature. Warm air helps the hairs move and be flexible, while cold air reduces mobility, making it harder for them to catch incoming intruders.

A coat is able to provide that warm air. The entire body is warmed through the use of a coat, so even incoming cold air will be warmed up due to the body being hotter. By wearing a coat, you enable the respiratory tract to properly do its function.

Not only that, but a coat has another purpose. When you are cold, the body has to expend energy to keep you warm. The expenditure takes a toll on the body, and it has to properly manage energy to ensure you can stay warm. Since your body is using more energy, it becomes harder for the body to catch any incoming germs.

By heating the body, you allow it to concentrate on the task at hand: catching and removing germs.

Clean Air
Aside from warm air, clean air helps as well. If you live in an environment with clean air, then this can also decrease the chances of a cold getting into your system, and it improves your body’s ability to fight off the cold.

This does not mean that you should forego a coat, even if you do live in a clean area. Always make sure you have on one. Clean air is great, but it is not nearly as effective as wearing a coat to warm up your body. Just make sure to bundle up, and you shouldn’t have any problems with catching a cold.

Conclusion
Does wearing a coat prevent a cold 100 percent of the time? Not at all. Germs can still get into your body, and even the best layering system will not always protect you.

But, a coat can definitely increase the chances of you escape the cold without getting sick. So, listen to your mom, put on your coat and help your body fight off diseases. It may not be a surefire way to stop all the cold, but it is better than going outside in just a t-shirt.

Still, you'd be surprised what some of these stores have to offer if you really spend some time looking. One thing you may want to consider to improve your chances of coming across high fashion finds is to look for resale stores in high-end neighborhoods.

2.      Join online shoppers clubs.

Joining online shoppers clubs is an incredible way to save money on high fashion items. 3.      Consider renting high-end items.

Here is some advice before buying an over-sized belt.  Consider buying a belt with an elastic waist.  I had bought an all leather over-sized very wide belt, and I never wear it because it doesn't hug my waist.  If you do have a small waist, it won't sit properly enough to be comfortable.  If you do consider a wide belt, get one that has a bigger presence in the front than on the sides.  It will give you the illusion of a bigger belt, while at the same time, the sides will ride nicely on your hips.  Any elastic belt with more detail at the front will be a great belt you will use for years.  Use them over coats, over dresses, or jumpsuits.  Wide belts will always remain stylish.
